What is daylight saving time?

In short, it’s “spring forward or fall back” time! DST is a common practice used in a lot of countries around the world. It aims to make better use of daylight. To know which countries observe DST and what the start and the end dates are, see Daylight Saving Time Around the World 2023.

How does it work?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the countries that observe DST set clocks forward 1 hour in the spring, and back by 1 hour in the fall to revert to standard time. In the Southern Hemisphere, the clocks change in the opposite direction – 1 hour back in the spring, and 1 hour forward in the fall. In this way, it gets dark at a later clock time, and people can make better use of natural daylight and save energy.

How can it impact my scheduled lessons?

After DST changes come into effect, the time difference between October 29 - November 5 to make sure you can attend all scheduled lessons. If necessary, contact your students to prevent confusion.

Calendar conflicts

To help your students stick to their learning habits, it’s important to adapt your schedule to the time when students used to take lessons before the DST changes. Students’ motivation is easy to shatter, so we highly recommend that our tutors make all the changes on their side to keep teaching their regular students successfully. Also, please watch out for any calendar conflicts. If some of your students live in countries that observe DST and others live in countries that don't, this can cause calendar conflicts.

Example: You are located in Spain where DST is observed, and you have two regular students, Alice and Mark, who take lessons every Tuesday. Alice lives in Spain just like you and her lessons usually start at 17:00. Mark is located in Egypt where there will be no DST changes in 2022, and he takes lessons at 18:00. On March 27, 2022, the clock will shift forward 1 hour for you and Alice. This will cause a conflict because now Alice and Mark will have their lessons scheduled for the same time!

Please stay in touch with your students outside lessons and confirm your lesson schedule with them from time to time.
